Our Friday Night Vesper’s gathering in May was a truly touching and inspiring evening, thanks to the presence of Humberto Harrison, a remarkable and living testament to the power of God, and a good dose of resilience and second chances.
Humberto, a distinguished 2003 graduate of DAP, graced us with his heartfelt presence alongside his loving wife, Lessie. They traveled all the way from California to witness the graduation of their granddaughter, a momentous occasion that brought special joy to their hearts. During the evening, we had the privilege of hearing Humberto’s deeply personal journey, which began with his struggles and eventual triumph over addiction. As a professional barber, Humberto faced his own demons, succumbing to the grip of drug use at the tender age of 25. From 1985 to 2001, he battled addiction to crack cocaine, losing his job, car, and home within a short span of just three months.
However, even in the face of adversity, Humberto found strength from God, within himself, to turn his life around. After experiencing the joys of family life through marriage and the birth of his son, Michael, he faced setbacks and periods of relapse. Nevertheless, Humberto’s unwavering determination led him back to the embrace of his church community, where he sought solace and began a fresh new start.
It was during this crucial turning point that Humberto crossed paths with Lessie, who became his confidante and pillar of support. Together, they nurtured a deep friendship and even had dreams of marriage. Unfortunately, Humberto experienced another relapse, plunging into the depths of depression and succumbing to several cocaine binges.
In his darkest hour, Humberto sought help from his pastor and best friend, who introduced him to Cliff, a guiding light in his journey to recovery. Humberto immediately enrolled in the program, determined to reclaim his life. With the support of DAP, Humberto thrived, graduating in 2002 and transitioning to the program’s Transition Home. While working as a barber in Grand Terrace, Humberto’s commitment extended beyond his personal recovery journey; he entrusted his hard-earned wages to Cliff, displaying his resolute faith in their mentorship.
To summarize a remarkable tale of redemption, there was a pivotal moment when Humberto’s actions spoke volumes. He regressed while living in the Transition Home. Despite amassing $1000 in savings and facing the prospect of starting the program over, Humberto recognized the profound bond he had formed with Cliff, a father figure who had played an integral role in his transformation. It was this realization that prompted him to let Cliff keep the money and recommit himself to the program. A year later, Humberto triumphantly graduated once again.
Today, Humberto resides in Moreno Valley, CA, where he thrives as a talented barber. Humberto shares a blissful marriage with Lessie since 2004, celebrating two decades of sobriety and a life rebuilt from the ground up.
Stories like Humberto’s serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience within us all, igniting the flames of hope during challenging times. Let his journey inspire us to persevere, knowing that even in the face of adversity, through God, victory is within reach.
