Dear Family Member:
This month, we are delighted to share the story of Oscar Khan, our 2025 graduate.
During his years at a Christian academy in southern California, Oscar was introduced to Cliff in1993, when Cliff gave his personal testimony at the school’s Chapel gathering.
A neighbor introduced Oscar to marijuana, which led to regular use. He then introduced it to his friends at the academy and eventually began distributing the drugs within the school.
Later, he was introduced to methamphetamines. Three peers joined him in dealing the drug to a network of students. A young girl almost overdosed at school and informed the principal about Oscar, an upper-class man, who was dealing the drugs.
Cliff was approached by the school for advice on Oscar’s case. Over breakfast off campus, Cliff requested that Oscar turn over the drugs. After initial denial, Oscar produced the drugs, which Cliff then disposed of. Oscar incurred a debt to the dealers for the removed drugs and was compelled to repay them. Cliff recommended that the principal consider an alternative measure and grant Oscar another chance. Oscar attended the DAP weekly support group sessions, refrained from using and selling drugs at school, and ultimately graduated in 1995 after performing well academically.
Over the next 30 years, Oscar continued to battle addiction without achieving lasting sobriety. His life was marked by intense struggles. He stole large funds from his mother’s retirement savings, committed robbery at a bank, and was incarcerated for 2.5 years. During this time, he associated with a gang, sold drugs, and frequently committed robberies. Oscar also worked for a car title company, conducting secret drug deals linked to vehicle purchases.
Upon losing his mother, Oscar became utterly unmanageable. She had consistently tried to instill Christian values in him. Her death sent his life into a low decline. Oscar felt deeply wounded when his father remarried within a year, leading him to lash out by stealing from his stepmother.
Oscar’s life was marked by extensive danger, as he struggled against Satan who tried to claim him. His addiction to drugs presented a significant challenge, one that he appeared unwilling to overcome. Death hung dangerously close on numerous occasions. His lifestyle was entirely illicit, and he lacked the required credentials to operate a vehicle legally. Nonetheless, Oscar prospered as a high-stakes drug dealer, using his ill-gotten gains to obtain extravagant properties and luxury vehicles.
In February 2023, he reached a critical point from a fentanyl overdose intended to end his life. Recalling Cliff, a positive influence from his teenage years, he appealed to his father to find him for support. The words Cliff spoke 30 years ago resonated strongly, ‘If you don’t stop using drugs, you’ll end up back in my hands again.’ For Oscar, these words had become a grim reality. Oscar’s father found Cliff, and from his hospital room, Oscar contacted him, seeking enrollment in DAP and Oscar was approved to join the program.
After completing the program’s 18-month duration, Oscar has chosen to dedicate his life to serving others, allowing God’s plan to guide his future. His commitment to giving back to DAP is evident in his eagerness to support his fellow brothers and guide them towards spiritual development. As house manager and lawn supervisor, Oscar’s tireless efforts have brought respect and gratitude from the staff and clients, making him a vital component of the program.
Listen to Oscar’s testimony:
“Having been trapped in the suffering of drug addiction for what seemed like an eternity, my existence was a constant struggle against its grip, and I was losing. Control over my life had slipped away, my identity was lost, and I felt surrounded by darkness. With nothing left to give and unable to find a way out, it was then that God provided a lifeline, DAP, saving me when all seemed lost. The change wasn’t immediate but rather a gradual process of healing that lifted the overwhelming despair, replacing it with a sense of peace that brought comfort after years of turmoil. Through the grace of God, I gained the strength to overcome addiction, discovered a new sense of purpose, and DAP gave me a second chance at a life filled with meaning and free from drugs, a life which I am grateful for every single day.”
Family Member, we hope Oscar’s story will warm your heart, revealing the power of Jesus Christ and the great lengths He will go to save a single soul for His kingdom. His mother did not see her prayers for her son answered in her lifetime. Still, a joyful reunion of Oscar and his mother will occur when Jesus returns.
Your kindness has made it possible for Oscar to be part of this program. Accepted initially without funds, he benefited immensely from the experience, marking a new chapter in his spiritual journey. Financial limitations do not bar anyone from participating in our program. We are deeply thankful for your enduring love, dedication, and financial backing over nearly four decades. The Book of Life will testify to the impact of your deeds, notably in leading men to Christ. The soon coming of Jesus will indeed be momentous!
With our deepest love,
