Dear Family Member,
As we welcome a new year, our hearts overflow with gratitude for the blessings of new beginnings and the unshakable bonds that sustain us. Each day is a fresh opportunity to build something beautiful—an expression of heaven on earth—together. Despite the challenges and uncertainties, we remain steadfast, united in purpose, and ever inspired by the extraordinary moments that remind us why we do what we do. One such moment unfolded on a casual flight, where Cliff and Freddie crossed paths with Jonathan and Christina Mendoza, a couple whose story has profoundly touched our hearts.
“In the Back of the ‘Bus’
How sitting at the back of the plane led to a life-changing encounter.
Cliff and I typically fly with the same airline, but this time, I booked a cheaper option with fewer benefits, no carry-ons or assigned seats. As we boarded, Cliff grew annoyed by the ticket agent stopping me about my bag and was further displeased when we had to sit at the back of the plane in rows 38 A & B. However, I was mindful of our budget, knowing we had upcoming trips, and trying to save on costs. Despite his frustration, Cliff asked me to avoid booking economic seats in the future.
Once seated, we met Jonathan and Christina Mendoza, seated across from us with their sons, 14-year-old Bentley and 3-year-old Theo. Little Theo began crying loudly, and although another passenger offered to help, Christina, understandably uncomfortable, declined. Cliff, known as the “Child Whisperer” for his natural connection with children, stepped in and successfully calmed Theo down.
During the flight, Cliff and Jonathan struck up a conversation. He learned they were returning home to San Diego after visiting family in Houston. When asked about our trip, he shared that we were in route to our son’s installation as the new pastor of the Claremont Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Cliff felt led by the Holy Spirit to invite the family to the service, and to his surprise, Jonathan enthusiastically accepted. Cliff asked, “Why do you want to come?’ He replied, “I need Jesus in my life.” His sincerity touched Cliff deeply.
The next morning, we were thrilled to see Jonathan, Christina, and their family arrive early for Sabbath School and the Installation Service. Their commitment was heartwarming. After the service, we enjoyed a delightful vegan lunch, a weekly tradition for members and guests at the church. Over time, the Mendoza’s formed a strong connection with our son London and the church community, leading to regular Bible studies.
Their story is a powerful testament to God’s timing. Christina had lost her 16-year-old son, Isaiah, to gun violence three years prior—a tragic event that left her in deep grief. Through Bible studies and the support of the Claremont church family, Christina began to heal and find peace, knowing her son was resting in God’s care. The church even sponsored her to attend a 10-day restoration program at Weimar Institute, a lifestyle -oriented health care center, which aided her spiritual and emotional healing.
A remarkable transformation followed. Jonathan and Christina, though unmarried, decided to live apart after learning what the Bible teaches about marriage. Christina moved in with her mother, and the couple committed to a platonic relationship until their wedding.
In August 2024, after completing Bible studies and marriage counseling, they felt ready to become husband and wife. On September 3, 2024, London had the honor officiating their wedding. But that was not the only blessing—they were both baptized on September 28, 2024. The impact of the three of them standing in the baptismal pool embracing in tears, grateful for the journey that has brought them to form such a bond that will forever keep them connected. It was a joyous occasion, and we marveled at how God had orchestrated their path.
The Mendoza’s have continued to be active members of the church, giving their hearts and service to others. Jonathan joined the “Service And Love Together” (SALT) ministry, where they provide showers and necessities to the homeless. Bentley has also embraced the church, joined the Pathfinder Club, and attended the International Pathfinder Camporee in Wyoming. Inspired by the experience, he decided to be baptized.
We were delighted to discover that Jonathan owns a printing business. Eager to support him, we awarded him the contract to print DAP’s t-shirts and hats. His business has since expanded, with orders from various church ministries, opening doors to even greater opportunities.
Jonathan and Christina’s marriage and baptism mark a new beginning. Their lives, transformed by Christ, now shine with joy and purpose.
Lesson: God’s ways far surpass our own. Two lives, once burdened by grief and uncertainty, are now filled with unwavering faith and joy, transformed by His grace.
As we step into this new year, we are deeply grateful for your enduring support, kindness, and generosity. It is because of you—our faithful partners in this mission—that lives are being changed, and heaven is being built on earth, one step at a time. Your belief in the work we do and the love you pour out to those in need inspire us daily. May this year bring abundant blessings, renewed hope, and a reminder that together, we are making a difference.
With gratitude and love,
